AI Can Do a Lot— But Should It?

July 22, 2026

AI tools promise greater efficiency, relief from administrative tasks, stronger outputs, and more data-informed decisions. Those possibilities deserve our attention. But before diving fully into the deep end on what AI can do, we also need to ask what it should—and should not—do.

As leaders, we are responsible not only for evaluating AI’s capabilities, but also for determining whether those capabilities align with our mission, values, and care for the people entrusted to us. Compliance, privacy, and security matter deeply. They are non-negotiable. But ethical AI use extends beyond compliance.

Sometimes the most ethical use of AI is choosing not to use it.

That may sound strange in a moment when so much attention is focused on innovation and acceleration. Yet not every problem should be solved with technology, and not every human task should be AI optimized.

Ethics asks a different set of questions. How will this affect the people we serve? What impact might it have on our culture, our relationships, and the trust others place in us? Does this use of AI advance our mission, or simply increase efficiency?

In some cases, ethical AI use may even mean choosing not to use AI. It may mean showing up as a flesh-and-blood human.

Sometimes the best way we can care for one another, our clients, and our residents is not the most efficient or expedient way. It’s the human way.

It may be sitting quietly with a resident who has received difficult news, listening to a family member wrestling with uncertainty, or taking a few extra minutes to support an overwhelmed colleague. These moments may never appear in a report or performance metric, but they are often the most impactful moments where trust is built and our mission is lived out.

As you consider AI within your organization, reflect on this: Will this use of AI strengthen our ability to care for others and advance our mission, or will it diminish something essential to who we are?

Answers may take time. But for humans, these are conversations worth having.

Until next time, stay curious, lead thoughtfully, and keep humans at the center of the work.
